The seminar will focus on how public officials can support critical economic preparedness and recovery activities within their community to protect key economic assets and encourage resiliency among local businesses in the event of a major disaster. Instructors

Richard Crotty Former Mayor of Orange County, Florida Mayor Crotty served from 2001 to 2011 as the chief executive of Orange County, FL, which county seat is Orlando. During his tenure, he successfully cooperated with regional partners to support disaster recovery efforts, strengthen the visitor economy around Disneyworld, and pursue economic diversification efforts following the disasters of September 11th and Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jeanne in 2004. Previously, he served in the Florida State Legislature in both the House and the Senate. He has appeared on the CBS Evening News, the Today Show, Good Morning America, the Weather Channel, CNN, Fox News and other cable networks regarding Orange County’s emergency management efforts. John McKay Board of Supervisor for Jackson County, Mississippi John McKay is the President of the Jackson County, Mississippi, Board of Supervisors, where he is currently serving his fourth term after retiring from the Chevron Pascagoula Refinery. McKay served 27 years in the Mississippi Army National Guard, having reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and earning a Bronze Star for leadership. Supervisor McKay worked on critical response and recovery efforts for the county after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Mickie Valente Principal, Valente Strategic Advisers, LLCMs Mickie Valente serves as the President of Valente Strategic Advisers, which assists community and business leaders in developing economic resiliency and redevelopment plans prior to a disaster as well as helps communities to identify economic recovery strategies following any economic disruption. She has led innovative projects, which encourage regional collaboration among economic development, workforce development and emergency management organizations to build more diversified economies and resilient communities. At Enterprise Florida, she led the development of Emergency Support Function 18 for Business & Industry at Florida’s State Emergency Operation Center.
