Free Entrepreneurship Workshop

The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) is holding a free workshop on entrepreneurship in Beaumont, TX. Divided into two sessions, this workshop will focus on implementation strategies for technical assistance report recommendations delivered to Beaumont in early 2013. IEDC is also planning to offer an entrepreneurship workshop later this summer in Lake Charles, LA. The Beaumont and Lake Charles workshops will be tailored to the specific needs of each community, but will also feature strategies applicable to economic developers elsewhere who are working to enhance their community’s entrepreneurship ecosystem and diversify the local economy.

Connecting to Capital

Connecting to Capital is a preview of Friday’s half-day workshop, Organizational Management and Finance for Business Incubators. Connecting to Capital will provide strategies for building organizational capacity to connect entrepreneurs to capital. Attendees will learn how to improve entrepreneurs’ access to both private and public sources of capital.

Organizational Management and Finance for Business Incubators

Date: Friday, April 12, 2013 Time: 8:30am - 12:00pm CST Location: Holiday Inn Beaumont Plaza, 3950 Walden Rd., Beaumont, TX 77705 The purpose of this workshop is to provide practical strategies and best-practice case information for building sustainability in the operations and financial structure of a university-based business incubator. During this workshop attendees will:
  • Become familiar with best practices in business incubator organizational management, including key elements for writing an effective business plan, developing a marketing and communications strategy, and establishing performance metrics for measuring success;
  • Discover how to closely partner with regional stakeholders to leverage community and university resources;
  • Better understand how to develop a self-sustaining organizational budget, including identifying and implementing diverse revenue streams; and
  • Learn how other communities have successfully used their business incubator to implement an economic diversification initiative through entrepreneurship.

Instructor

Charles D’Agostino Founder and Executive Director, Louisiana Business and Technology Center at Louisiana State University Mr. D’Agostino has been actively involved in entrepreneurship, economic development, and small business issues for the last 23 years. Under the umbrella of the Louisiana Business and Technology Center (LBTC), D’Agostino directs the Small Business Incubator, the LSU Small Business Development Center (SBDC), LSU Rural Entrepreneurship and disaster business counseling programs, the International Business program, and the Louisiana Technology Transfer Office (LTTO). Under D’Agostino’s direction, the Louisiana Business & Technology Center was selected as the 2005 National Business Incubator of the Year and the 2009 Most Innovative Incubator Program. In addition, the LBTC won the 2009 U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Excellence in Economic Development Award. These free seminars are supported by a grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration.
