On April 23rd, 2013 IEDC hosted a webinar on how to prepare for the next economic disruption. This included practical steps to aid your local business community. The straightforward advice will assist you and your organization so you can continue operations in the event of a major catastrophe to better serve the larger community. Natural and man-made disasters can strike at any time. Without any warning, a disaster can disrupt business operations and negatively impact local economies. Regardless of the disaster, a preparedness strategy can ensure your local business community is better equipped to respond to a major disaster in a timely fashion. Preparedness approaches such as business continuity planning workshops, working with financial institutions to create “rainy-day” funds and creating a disaster communication plan can help your community be ready for the next major economic disruption.

Edwards, Executive Director, Community and Regional Resilience Institute (CARRI), Oak Ridge, TN Warren Edwards is the Executive Director, Community and Regional Research Institute (CARRI) with offices in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Washington, DC. The mission of CARRI is to help develop and then share critical paths that any community or region may take to strengthen its ability to prepare for, respond to, and rapidly recover from significant man-made or natural disasters with minimal downtime of basic community, government, and business services. CARRI believes that a resilient America must be anchored in resilient American communities. CARRI combines community engagement activities with practical research activities. Rob O’Brian, CEcD, President, Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce, Joplin, MO Rob O'Brian's activities include President of the Joplin Business and Industrial Development Corporation, Vice-President of the Joplin Industrial Development Authority, current Board Member and Past-President of the Missouri Economic Development Council, Board Member and Past-President, Missouri Economic Development Financing Association. O'Brian was a member of Governor Blunt's State Government Reform Commission and was instrumental in writing the Enterprise Zone and Quality Jobs Act legislation. Since the May 22, 2011 tornado that devastated one-third of Joplin, O'Brian has been at the forefront of the recovery efforts by amassing resources for the business community to ensure that businesses can rebuild and thrive in the community.
