Workforce Report on The Impact of Extreme Events on Business Organizations: Innovative Approaches to Managing Risk

The National Association of Workforce Development Boards recently released a paper on workforce development in the wake of disaster, entitled, "The Impact of Extreme Events on Business Organizations: Innovative Approaches to Managing Risk for the National Association of Workforce Boards." This report presents five sets of findings in reference to workforce investment activities relevant to risk assessment, mitigation, and recovery from extreme events.The five findings presented are:
  1. Key provisions of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 that apply to disaster events.
  2. Key strategies that were implemented by experienced WIB managers in other regions as they coped with previous disaster events and the ensuing aftermath.
  3. Characterize the impact of Superstorm Sandy on business organizations, identify the major actors that engaged in response operations before, during, and after the storm, and assess the interactions among public, private, and nonprofit organizations as the communities in the affected region sought to respond to and recover from the storm.
  4. Identify areas of response operations that proved effective, and gaps where performance could be improved in future disaster events.
  5. Suggestions for strengthening the capacity of the NAWB to serve its clientele by reducing the consequences of disaster events.
