Webinar Recording: Establishing a 501c3 for Economic Development & Recovery

On March 13th, 2014, IEDC held the Establishing a 501c3 for Economic Development & Recovery webinar. In communities that have demonstrated resiliency in facing a major crisis, economic developers have often pointed to the creation of a structure to support the recovery process and to respond to the vast rebuilding challenges. From Joplin's 2011 tornado to Southern California after the Northridge earthquake, community and business leaders have found it is important to establish an IRC 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization for economic development and recovery purposes. Whether created before or after a crisis, these tax-exempt organizations have played a direct role in guiding community resources, including those from the private sector, towards long-term economic recovery. Trevor Wilson Partner - Jones Walker Law

B. Trevor Wilson is a partner in the firm's Tax & Estates Practice Group.  Mr. Wilson is a licensed CPA and focuses his practice on federal taxation, both domestic and international aspects, as well as state and local taxation, estate planning and the administration of successions. He is involved in the structuring of business activities for nonprofit and for-profit organizations, including executive compensation and employee benefits.

Mr. Wilson holds a Master of Laws in Taxation from the New York University School of Law.  He received his juris doctor degree from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center, Louisiana State University where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and the Tullis Moot Court Board.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, magna cum laude, from Louisiana State University.  

Tonya Sprenkle Vice President Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Tonya Sprenkle serves as the Vice President of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce (JACC), where she directs the staff and the day to day activities of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce with respect to general and fiscal management. She also coordinates the organizational activities and programs while working with the President and Board of Directors on the vision, objectives and policies of the Chamber and other affiliated organizations. In her role as the Joplin Chamber’s Finance Director (1992 – 2011), she helped to establish the JACC Foundation, a 501c3 organization focused on economic development and economic recovery activities in 1992. Since the May 22, 2011 tornado, Tonya has been responsible for the JACC Business Recovery Fund, which was established under the JACC Foundation in order to help the business community with long term recovery and helping make Joplin better than ever.
