On Thursday, August 25, IEDC held a webinar titled “Tale from the Trenches: Hurricane Recovery.” The webinar featured insights from two economic developers from communities that have experienced severe impacts from hurricanes. Tiffany Garling, executive director of the Jackson County (Fla) Economic Development Committee, discussed the devastating impacts Hurricane Michael had on her community. Garling explained how her organization was able to coordinate with and support businesses, emergency workers, and residents in its aftermath. Chuck Wemple, executive director of the Houston-Galveston (Tex) Area Council, described his community’s experience with the evacuation order issued ahead of Hurricane Ike. Wemple also offered helpful advice and tips for economic developers to effectively support and help finance local businesses before and after a hurricane. The discussion was moderated by IEDC’s Emily Brown.
