IEDC held a webinar June 11, 205 on, Strategies to Retain Businesses After a Crisis. The longer a business is closed after a disaster, the less likely it will reopen. Successful responses to aid businesses return to operations is vital to jumpstart recovery for the community. These strategies are not only effective in retaining local businesses but can lead to expansion or modernization of operations and an increase in employment.  This webinar explored strategies to keep retain businesses impacted by disaster both in the short and long-term.

Jessica Taylor Vice President, 10,000 Small Businesses Goldman Sachs, New York, NY Jessica Taylor is a Vice President at Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses, a program that helps entrepreneurs grow their businesses and create jobs by providing greater access to education, business support services and capital. In her role Jessica oversees program sites in Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit. Previously, Jessica was the Executive Director of Performance Management at the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) where she managed the Avenue NYC grant program, which funds 40+ local development organizations citywide to execute commercial revitalization strategies. Additionally while at SBS, Jessica managed several Superstorm Sandy programs designed to revitalize storm-impacted commercial corridors. Jessica also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala, implementing health programs in rural schools. Jessica received her Master of Public Administration from Columbia University’s School of International & Public Affairs and earned her B.A. from the University of Virginia.  

Rob Walsh Lecturer and Faculty Director of the Executive Master of Public Administration Program City University of New York, Baruch College, School of Public Affairs Robert W. Walsh served as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) from January 2002 to December 2013. During his twelve year tenure, he reshaped SBS to become one of the city's most innovative agencies in serving the needs of its 200,000 small businesses. Walsh re-energized the city's 69 business improvement districts and created an award-winning commercial revitalization and neighborhood leadership program in partnership with the Coro Foundation. Under his leadership, seven NYC Business Solutions Centers were established that secured more than $200 million for small businesses in the last six years of his tenure. He also introduced NYC Business Express an online tool for the license, permit, tax, and incentive information and applications businesses need to operate. He created a wide array of entrepreneurial courses and forged new partnerships with groups including the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City, Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program, Interise, and the Kauffman Foundation. Walsh also built a new business-focused approach to the workforce system that placed nearly 200,000 people in jobs through 17 workforce career centers. Prior to his service with the city, Walsh served as President of Charlotte Center City Partners in North Carolina, an organization dedicated to improving and growing Charlotte's central business district. In Charlotte, he led the Center City 2010 Master Plan that laid the groundwork for significant private and public investments in the core of the city including more housing, retail development, an NBA basketball arena, a minor league baseball stadium, cultural facilities, a light rail line, and parks and open space. He initiated the recruitment efforts that attracted Johnson & Wales University to the Center City.
