On November 21 from 2:30-4:00EST IEDC held a webinar on how to write a winning grant application. When planning for or responding to a disaster, community leaders should take advantage of the significant grant-based resources that are available from both the public and private sectors. Because these grants can be very competitive, it is important for applicants to fully understand how to develop a winning grant application. This webinar explored best practices in successful grant applications. Participants learned:
- How to identify the right grantors
- Create a grant-writing calendar
- Develop a comprehensive grant application strategy
- Enhance their grant-writing technique.

Kim Compton President Compton Economics Kim is a Certified Economic Developer and has over 20 years’ experience in economic development. Currently Kim is President of Compton Economics, a research group focusing on economic growth and development. Kim has served as Economic Development Director for the Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission, Economic Development Director the City of Gulfport, Research Director for Louisiana’s Department of Economic Development, Director of the Economic Development Resource Center at the University of Southern Mississippi and Deputy Director of the Harrison County Development Commission. She served two terms as President of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Alliance for Economic Development. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in economics from Millsaps College and a Master’s Degree in Economic Development from the University of Southern Mississippi, where she was awarded the Munro Petroleum Award for Excellence by a student. Continuing her studies, Kim was awarded a Fellowship from the USDA’s Economic Research Service while pursuing her PhD in economics at Clemson University.
Allison Beasley, CEcD Planning Director Southern Mississippi Planning & Development District Allison Beasley is the Economic Development Division Director for Southern Mississippi Planning and Development District based in Gulfport. The District is a regional economic development group serving the state’s fifteen southernmost counties. Prior to joining The District in 2001, Allison was the Executive Director of the Lauderdale County Tourism Bureau inMeridian. She has also worked in economic development for the Area Development Partnership (ADP) in Hattiesburg and the Mississippi Department of Economic and Community Development (now MDA) based in Jackson. Allison began her career as Director of theMain Streetprogram inColumbia,Mississippi. She holds a Master’s Degree in Economic Development from the University of Southern Mississippi, which was obtained in 1996 while working at the ADP. She is a graduate of the Institute for Organization Management at the College of Charleston and has earned the Certified Economic Developer title from the International Economic Development Council. In 2005, Allison was named one of the state’s Top 40 Under 40 business persons by the Mississippi Business Journal. Allison has been active in numerous business and civic organizations. She currently serves on the Mississippi Main Street Association’s Board of Directors and the Mississippi Burn Foundation’s Board of Directors. She enjoys family time, scuba diving, and cheering on the Mississippi State University Bulldogs, where she says she went to “college” before attending “school” at USM.
